Personal recommendation
Another one everybody should read. Money is among the most central systems we live inside, and most of us have never looked at how it works. This brought me a lot of clarity.
What the book is about
Alden goes through the history of money as a technology: what banks actually do, why the system works the way it does, and where the current design keeps failing the people inside it.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
Alden treats money as a technology and asks why the current version keeps failing the people who have to use it.
- It runs historically: shells, gold, telegraph wires, central banks, the eurodollar system, Bitcoin.
- The recurring argument is that money moves at the speed of the network carrying it, and that this speed shaped every system we have had.
- Long sections on how banks actually create money and what a settlement layer is.
- Emerging markets get real attention, including people whose savings were destroyed by their own currency.
- Alden is a Bitcoin proponent and says so, but spends most of the book on everything else.
Thick and technical in places. The best single explanation of the monetary system I know of.
