Personal recommendation
One of the most critical books I have read. Not all of it convinced me, and that is exactly why it was interesting. I think you have to sit with uncomfortable material to form your own view.
What the book is about
Nehls argues that attention, memory and judgement can be influenced from outside, and connects neurobiology with media and politics. The thesis is contested and the book states it sharply.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
Nehls is a physician and researcher, and the book argues that attention, memory and judgement can be influenced from outside, with the hippocampus at the centre.
- The biological part covers neurogenesis in the hippocampus and what he says damages it, including stress, isolation and lack of sleep.
- From there he moves to media, politics and the pandemic measures, and treats them as causes rather than as context.
- The connection between the neuroscience and the political argument is where the book is most contested.
- Several of the claims have been publicly disputed by other researchers.
- He writes as someone convinced, and the tone is closer to an indictment than to an investigation.
Controversial, and its supporters and critics do not agree on basic points. Read it with sources open, or not at all.
