Personal recommendation
One of those books you wish somebody at the education ministry would pick up. It showed me how learning should actually go. Extremely valuable if you want to rethink schooling.
What the book is about
Beck is a neuroscientist and his point is that the brain is bad at storing and good at understanding, which makes most of what schools do backwards.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
Beck is a neuroscientist and his starting point is that the brain is bad at storing and good at understanding, which makes most teaching backwards.
- The comparison with a computer is attacked directly: the brain does not save files and does not retrieve them.
- Forgetting is presented as a feature. What survives is what has been connected to something else.
- Mistakes are treated as the mechanism of learning rather than as its failure.
- He is sharp about schools, exams and the training industry, and about learning methods sold as brain based.
- There is practical material, but it is thinner than the criticism.
Well argued and readable. Strongest as a demolition of how learning is usually organised.
