Personal recommendation
The weakest book I have read from him. It gave me little, and none of the pull his other work has. Someone looking for exactly this may get more out of it than I did.
What the book is about
Kornfield writes about mindfulness and compassion from decades of practice, with exercises for the days when the mind will not settle.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
Kornfield trained as a Buddhist monk in Thailand and Burma and later worked as a psychotherapist, and the book sits between both.
- It is about practice rather than doctrine: sitting, attention, and what actually happens in the months and years of doing it.
- A large part covers the difficulties, including the ones that come from using meditation to avoid something.
- Spiritual bypassing gets named directly: people who meditate for years and have not touched the thing that hurts.
- Chapters on teachers, on community and on when to be suspicious of both.
- Western psychology is treated as a necessary companion rather than as a rival.
Warm and unhurried. One of the few books in this area that does not promise anything.
