Personal recommendation
One of the best books I have read. Since then I understand better why people decide the way they decide. If you want to get a grip on yourself and the people around you, read it.
What the book is about
Thaler tells how behavioural economics came about, mostly by collecting the cases where people stubbornly refused to behave like the models said they would. The experiments are the good part.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
Thaler tells how behavioural economics grew up, mostly by describing the fights it caused inside his own field.
- It starts with a list he kept of things people do that economic theory said they would not.
- Mental accounting, the endowment effect, sunk costs and fairness each get a chapter with the experiment behind it.
- The running distinction is between Econs, who are consistent and selfish, and Humans, who are neither.
- Later chapters cover nudging, automatic enrolment in pension plans, and the British government unit built on this work.
- Thaler is funny and settles a few old scores along the way.
More of a memoir than a textbook. Read Kahneman for the theory and this for how it got accepted.
