Personal recommendation
Probably the best biography I have read. It has the pull of a novel and is still as useful as a business book. What stays with me is how messy and uncertain success actually looked from the inside.
What the book is about
Knight tells the early years of Nike: importing Japanese shoes out of his car, always one bad month from the end, and the people who stayed anyway. The money trouble runs through almost every chapter.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
Knight's account of the first twenty years of the company that became Nike, written when he was almost eighty.
- It starts in 1962 with a trip to Japan, a made-up company name and a distributor deal he talked his way into.
- The through line is money. For years the business grew fast and was permanently one bank call away from ending.
- The people around him get more space than he does: an accountant with no filter, a coach who cut up shoes, a first employee who never left.
- The lawsuits, the fight with the Japanese supplier and the near-bankruptcy are told without cleaning them up.
- It stops in 1980 at the flotation, so the famous Nike is almost entirely outside the book.
Reads like a novel. One of the few business memoirs that admits how close it came to nothing.
