Personal recommendation
Not as strong as his other books, I think, but the core idea matters. Since reading it I notice who actually has something to lose in a decision, and a lot of situations look clearer that way.
What the book is about
Taleb’s argument is that whoever makes a decision should carry part of the downside. Where risk sits with one person and the consequences with another, the system gets unfair and unstable.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
Nobody should get to decide without carrying the downside. Taleb applies that one rule to everything in sight.
- Bankers, consultants, pundits and politicians are the targets, because they get the upside and pass on the loss.
- The minority rule: a small group that refuses to compromise can set the standard for everyone else.
- Lindy: for things that do not age, what has survived longest is likeliest to survive longest again.
- Sections on religion, on scars as evidence, and on why intellectuals are wrong more often than they are held to account for.
- It repeats material from his earlier books and assumes you have read them.
The last of the Incerto and the most combative. The core rule is simple and hard to argue with.
