Personal recommendation
One of the best philosophical books I have read. It moved how I think about control and about doing less on purpose. I come back to it and find something different each time.
What the book is about
Eighty-one short passages about yielding rather than forcing, about the use of empty space, and about how little of what happens is ours to steer.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
Eighty-one very short chapters from China, traditionally attributed to Laozi and roughly two and a half thousand years old.
- The central idea is acting without forcing, letting things take their course rather than pushing them.
- Water is the recurring image: soft, yielding, and it wears through stone.
- Much of it addresses rulers, arguing that the best leadership is barely noticed.
- The text works through paradox, so it resists being summarised and rewards rereading.
- Translations differ enormously. Two versions of the same chapter can say close to opposite things.
Thirty pages of text and a lifetime of commentary. Pick a translation carefully.
