Personal recommendation
A really good book, above all if you do not yet know what you want. It made me think more clearly about what will still matter in ten years. Right book at the right moment, and almost anyone gets something from it.
What the book is about
A story about a man who asks people what five things they want to have done before they die, and then builds a company around the answers. The fable carries the argument.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
A novel rather than a guidebook. A young man meets Thomas Derale, a businessman who runs his company on an unusual premise, and the story carries the ideas.
- Everyone is asked to name five things they want to do or see or experience before they die.
- Derale hires people whose own purpose fits the work, and lets them go when it stops fitting.
- The recurring image is a museum of your life, filled with what you actually spent your days on.
- The business scenes are the best part: what changes when a company is organised around why people came.
- It is sentimental in places and the plot exists to carry the message.
Read in an evening. Judge it as a parable, not as a company handbook.
