Personal recommendation
A really good book if you want to understand how money works at the level of behaviour. It helped me see why people make the financial decisions they do. Very valuable if you want to handle money more deliberately.
What the book is about
Housel collects stories about what people do with money and why: the janitor who left millions, the investor who lost everything, and the part luck plays that nobody wants to name.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
Twenty short chapters, each making one point. It is about behaviour throughout and barely about finance.
- The opening pair: a janitor who left millions and an executive who went bankrupt. Doing well with money has little to do with intelligence.
- Luck and risk are treated as the same thing seen from different sides, and he argues you cannot separate them cleanly.
- Chapters on enough, on the cost of volatility as a fee rather than a fine, and on why saving works without a reason attached.
- Tails: a small number of decisions produce almost all the result, in investing and in life.
- He is honest that his own portfolio is boring, and shows it.
Short, quotable and easy. One of the few money books that does not tell you what to buy.
