This began as fan fiction. A reader of Liu Cixin's trilogy wrote a continuation, posted it online, and it was good enough that it became an authorised novel with Liu's blessing. It picks up a thread the original left hanging, follows a character most readers assumed was finished, and then keeps going across spans of time that make the first three books look local. If you have not read the trilogy, none of this will mean anything. If you have, it is a strange and ambitious postscript by someone who clearly loved the original.
