Personal recommendation
I connect with this one more than I expected to. I am no great Buffett fan, but parts of his childhood read like mine, and that made the whole story land differently.
What the book is about
Schroeder had years of access to Buffett, and it shows: the habits, the frugality, the childhood paper round, and the way of thinking that grew out of all of it.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
Schroeder had five years of access to Buffett, his family and his files, and the result runs well past eight hundred pages.
- The title is his own image: a small snowball and a very long hill, meaning compounding over a lifetime.
- It covers the investing, from the first partnerships to Berkshire, with enough detail to follow the reasoning.
- It also covers the private life, including his wife's decision to move out and the arrangement that followed.
- Buffett cooperated fully and then distanced himself from the finished book, which tells you something about it.
- The early chapters on how he thought as a young investor are the most instructive.
Very long. The most complete account there is, and not a flattering one.
