Personal recommendation
I liked this a lot, and it is not an easy read. It made me think differently about self-interest and morality. Worth it if you are willing to work through the argument.
What the book is about
Rand argues that rational self-interest is a moral position, not a failing, and builds individual rights and her politics on top of it.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
A collection of essays, most by Rand and several by Nathaniel Branden, laying out her ethics rather than her novels.
- The provocation is in the title. She uses selfishness to mean concern with one's own rational interest, and says so in the first pages.
- Her argument is that altruism as a moral ideal is destructive, because it makes self-sacrifice the standard of virtue.
- Rights are derived from that position, and the state is limited to police, courts and defence.
- Several essays deal with specific questions: emergencies, conflicts of interest, racism, government financing.
- It is written as argument, not as persuasion, and she does not soften anything.
Not an easy read and not a balanced one. Worth it if you want the case stated at full strength.
- Mehrere Aufsätze behandeln einzelne Fragen: Notlagen, Interessenkonflikte, Rassismus, Staatsfinanzierung.
