Personal recommendation
This one changed my life. I see my own thinking differently since, and I understand why people decide against their own interest without noticing. Almost everyone takes something out of it.
What the book is about
Kahneman describes two ways of thinking: the fast one that answers before you notice, and the slow one you have to switch on. Most of the book is about the errors the first one makes and the second one waves through.
What to expect
Written with AI and checked by me. The score and the personal recommendation above are mine.
Kahneman sums up four decades of research here, work that won him the Nobel Prize in economics in 2002.
- Two systems: one fast and automatic, one slow, deliberate and lazy.
- The slow one usually waves through whatever the fast one hands it. The rest of the book is about where that goes wrong.
- Anchoring, availability, regression to the mean, each with the experiment behind it.
- Prospect theory: a loss weighs about twice as much as a gain of the same size.
- At the end, the split between the self that experiences and the self that remembers.
- One caveat: several priming studies in the book later failed to replicate, and Kahneman said so publicly in 2017.
Dense, and not a book for reading with one eye.
